Provo to La'ie (1/77)

Week one
We checked into the MTC at about 11:00 Monday morning. I worked out with Brian at the BYU gym early in the morning. Since we were not staying at the MTC we could worry about packing later. We went to the bookstore to get the standard issue texts, to the travel office to confirm we had no tickets for out bound travel and to the health office to learn that we need to get HIV tests. I wonder how many senior missionaries are testing positive these days?

We had lunch at the cafeteria, all you can eat, one plate was always enough for me. The afternoon was a large meeting with all 133 senior missionaries, one of their largest groups. They don't take missionaries in during Thanksgiving or Christmas, so lots were there right between.

That evening we met with two folks who would like to partner with us on an event
space at the Startup building.

We had our last Monday night Taylor Compound meal at Uncle David's home.

Anders and I met with a few lads who would like to run a coworking space at the Startup building. They would like to host a DevMtn for entraprenures.

We then met with Tony to look at redevelopment costs. It always costs more than we forecast and the estimates are usually lower than the actual bills.

As we walked through we noticed little things, like a large swath of floor we thought was concrete is actually asphalt and it is not even or smooth. That will be another $5000, thanks.

Tuesday back to the MTC, we broke into Districts and separated into smaller training rooms. I was asked to be district leader. Completely based on merit.

We had a morning teacher Zundel, a friend of KFace. An afternoon teacher Julia Pace who served a mission in Russia. Both very energetic and vivacious.

Wednesday we were out a bit early, so I went to take my HIV test. Katy took Zoe and Courney to get a tree for 1094 and Sweet 10.

Anders and Courtney live in Suite 10 at the Startup building but Sweet 10 is more appropriate for a place that was a candy factory.

Uncle Dickey took time out from the celebrations of the high Dickey days to cart me over to the BYU medical center for my test, I had studied hard and I was nervous. I took an anti anxiety pill to cope with the pressure. Zoe and Katy did not trust me to drive Mabel Mouse on my own, they called David to squire me over and back. He was a very good sport to assist.

I think I did really well on the test, no vomiting, fainting or loss of bodily functions. Nailed it.

Thursday more classes, the we went to Beehive Bazaar. Zenobia got a great green suit complete with a fur collar. Griffin lent her a fur hat to top it off, she look great.

We then went to the $100 Show at the Springville art museum. We held the first one at the Startup building, Brittany hosted the second one at Colman Gallery. Each has been flawed it terms of distribution an equality of access. Brian and I met with them before the show and advised them as to some ideas to make it more fair. This year they used separate tables for each artist and spread the table throughout the museum. It was better than some years but most artists had only a few works and the show sold out in minutes. Brian brought prints. It was nice since they are originals and yet there were plenty for those that wanted them. Cass Barney had a few drawings left and Sarah Samuelson had a few paintings, but by 30 minutes past opening it was mostly gone.

Friday the kids had organized a family photo. Millie snapped it in our living room. After MTC classes we came home and packed, took a short break for Happy Sumo sushi with our kids, then more packing, a bit of sleep and up at 5 to finish packing.

Griffin was up at 5 to see us off, but there was no room in the car for him to ride along. Never have we taken more luggage on a trip.

We have about 300 pounds. 4 ea 50lbs check in bags, two very heavy roller bags and two large personal items. Anders and Courtney drove us to the airport, they had to squeeze into the back seat with some of the baggage. Anders helped us in with our baggage train.

We flew to San Diego, short wait the on to Honolulu. Mark James picked us up at the airport and took us to the north shore. We got some Hawaiian Barbecue for dinner and picked up some groceries for the weekend. We are staying in the married student housing near the temple on BYU campus. Thus ended our first week.
